Anglesea St traffic and pedestrians will be restricted through the busy Christmas season.

A section of Anglesea St footpath and two southbound traffic lanes will be reduced to one while work on the Centre Place Shopping Centre continues.

The reduction of lanes will remain in place 24 hours a day until January 31. Pedestrians will need to cross Anglesea St from Ward St.

The footpath on the eastern side of Anglesea St will be closed from Ward St to the entrance of the Garden Place car park, while the southbound lanes of Anglesea St - closest to the shopping centre - will be reduced to one lane. A short section of the same road lane, from Ward St back towards Bryce St, will also be closed.

Hamilton City Council's transportation manager, Phil Consedine says contractors working for Centre Place owners, Kiwi Income Property Trust requested the lane reduction and footpath closure in the interests of public safety.

"The work being undertaken on the Kiwi Income Property Trust site is significant and includes removal of construction materials, so we want to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and motorists passing by," says Mr Consedine.

"The lane closure will create a little bit of traffic congestion and we thank motorists for their patience while this work is completed."
