Status quo for city council numbers

Hamilton City Council's electoral system will be unchanged for the elections next year and in 2016.

A change to 10 councillors, plus a mayor was considered.

However, after receiving formal submissions from the public in September, council voted to retain six councillors elected from each of the East and West Wards, plus a mayor elected city-wide.

Under the Local Government Act, council is required to review its representation arrangements through a process which includes public consultation.

Electoral officer Anthony Dick says the community had an opportunity to appeal council's decision on representation, but with no formal objections filed, the process was completed and the status quo remains.

Mr Dick says another review of representation arrangements will be in 2018, or sooner, if council wishes.
