Police officer attacked in Kawhia

Police are appealing for public information about a serious assault on an officer in the Waikato yesterday.

A policeman was arresting a man at the wharf in Kawhia for an outstanding warrant when other men known to the offender became involved in the arrest.

``While trying to arrest the offender the officer was assaulted by at least five males,'' said Acting Senior Sergeant Gael Mockford.

Fire service workers and residents came to the aid of the officer, and other police also responded to the incident, she said.

The officer was treated for his injuries and is recuperating with family.

Three of the offender's associates were arrested but at least two remain at large and police are asking anyone with information to contact Te Awamutu Police on 07 8720100.
